Looking for some ambient mp3s to download, or ambient music CDs to buy, but want something a little different? You've come to the right place. Enter the "ambient zone" with ambient music from three-time Billboard Award winner, Ray Lynch whose albums have sold in excess of 2 million copies.

Brian Eno, one of the godfathers of ambient music, has often said that ambient music stresses sound over note . Ray Lynch played ambient music before it was even hip . By fusing the multi-layered instrumentation of symphonic music with the dynamics of the electric keyboard, Ray Lynch constructed an innovative and unparalleled ambient style. Ray Lynch was also one of the first serious ambient artists with a classical background that embraced the new musical technologies for writing ambient music. He's an ambient artist with class (and classical background ). Ray embraced the newly emerging musical technologies early on, and pioneered their application in combination with a full range of acoustic instruments. The result -- highly emotional musical recordings that integrate highly textured, feeling soundscapes with melodies that capture the listener's heart.

It is the communication of deep and profound feeling, at once sensual and transcendent, that lies at the heart of Ray Lynch's musical sensibility. His compositions proceed with elegance and balance, structured in the classical sense rather than improvised. And yet Ray freely experiments with unconventional electronic sound samples and ambient textures and tonalities, which he combines with his unique mix of superbly recorded acoustic and electronic instruments.

Ray is a meticulous craftsman who polishes and refines each musical phrase, every voicing and every nuance, separately recording and thoughtfully comparing alternate phrasings and structures, and always insisting on the highest standards of quality. He spends long hours in the studio perfecting each piece of music he creates. For example, The True Spirit of Mom & Dad on No Blue Thing required eight months to complete -- more than 1200 hours in the studio!

Though he's one of the most influential artists in "new-age pop" and adult-alternative circles, Lynch has extensive formal music training. . . . Growing numbers of listeners seem attracted to his vibrant electronic textures and heartrending melodies.

Not many ambient albums can claim that they have sold over 168,000 copies, but Ray Lynch's first commercially released album has as Ray first experiments with electronic ambience. Soft Tibetan bells are accented by rich, evocative strings that are full of rich, sensual melodies. The mood is meditative and soothing, with heightened tonal space. Promoted by word-of-mouth-alone, this ambient album became an underground success. With sales in excess of 168,000 abums it is still widely used for meditation, relaxation, and all healing therapies. Also features flute, piano, guitar, recorders, cello, and electronic keyboards. On his influence by fellow electronic-ambience artist, Brian Eno, Ray writes:

The Sky of Mind (1983) was created after I realized that there was a small (but robust and growing) alternative market for something called "new age" music. I wasn't sure what that was, but SKY seemed to fit in okay. Aside from the fairly obvious "classical" connections, this album was influenced to some extent by the ambient music which began to appear in the late 70's (especially Brian Eno's work).

Uplifting, emotional ambient music at its best. Apparently many thought so, as Deep Breakfast was also New Age music's first Independently released Gold album. (It would later go Platinum.) This album is, in every sense, a classic of ambient music. Even if you don't recognize the name, you've probably heard music from THE classic Ray Lynch album. It's exuberant and uplifting, rich with romantic, melodic themes and playful arrangements It has since sold in excess of 1,256,000 albums. Features viola, piano, guitar, flute, and electronic keyboards. Like every artist of electronica, Ray delights in the discovery of new technological possibilities for ambient music wizardry, and Deep Breakfast reflected his enthusiasm:

DEEP BREAKFAST (1984) was possible because I had already done THE SKY OF MIND and new technological tools had become available. One part of my character had been summarized and expressed in the previous work and I was ready to do something different - something more energetic and less "controlled." I didn't "plan" or prefigure the album as a whole (I never do this). I simply started writing pieces which were interesting or moving or fun, or any combination of the above, and when I had enough pieces I spent a fair amount of time sequencing them until they seemed to work together. Technology played a significant role in this album: I had acquired an affordable 16 track tape recorder (so that I could work and record in my "home" studio) and, equally important, a Yamaha DX7 synthesizer which, when combined with the Korg Polysix and Arp Odyssey I already had, gave me the variety of sounds needed for a predominantly "electronic album." I had wanted tools like these for 15-20 years and the exuberance I felt from their acquisition spilled into the music I was creating.

Ray's use of synthesizers in The Oh of Pleasure represented a breakthrough in the history of ambient music. You probably will recognize Celestial Soda Pop.

Ray's most recent album. Here you'll find nine truly great (and digitally remastered!) pieces from Ray's prior four albums, plus two exquisite, new masterpieces of electronica, " Ralph's Rhapsody " and " The Music of What Happens ". Ray Lynch Best Of is included in Express.com's Top Ten New Age albums of all time:

The great recluse of New Age music, synthesist/composer Ray Lynch has been holed up in his northern California home studio for years, spinning out masterful miniatures, while steadfastly refusing to tour or score films. This album lives up to its title, serving up the finest of Lynch's diverse oeuvre, from the jocular " Ralph's Rhapsody" to the synthesized mini-symphony " The True Spirit of Mom & Dad ." The platinum-selling multiple-Billboard Award winner enjoyed one sizeable hit in his career, the witty " Celestial Soda Pop " (you'll recognize it), but turn to tracks like " The Temple " or " The Oh of Pleasure " to experience Lynch's unfettered genius for maximizing tonal space.
